ALL ABOUT THE HAZENDAL WINERY

Hazendal Wine Estate is located in the Bottelary Ward, which forms part of the internationally-renowned Stellenbosch wine region. The estate is on kthe original route between Cape Town and the historic town of Stellenbosch and has been an important resting point along this route. First opened in 1699, this estate is one of the oldest in the country.

In 1994, the winery was acquired by two Russian entrepreneurs: Dr Mark Voloshin and Leo Schumacher. Both developed a love for this country from the first moment they visited South Africa and spent years searching for the ideal estate to fulfil their dream of owning a wine farm in Stellenbosch. Hazendal Winery was the perfect place and the papers were signed on the 27th of April 1994.

The wine estate went through an enormous revitalisation process and was brought back to life by its owners and the new Hazendal team. With a great deal of passion, dedication and business acumen, the team has turned the estate into a truly unique gem and a must-see attraction for young and old. A special effort was made to maintain the farm's historical aspects while incorporating Dr Voloshin's and Mr Schumacher's Russian heritage.

HAZENDAL COMMUNITY WORK

A big commitment has been made by the owners towards the improvement of the farmers' day-to-day living situation. In 1994 a new farmers' village was created for the workers and their families. The village consists of 11 houses which are all equipped with electricity, warm water, toilets and bathrooms.

Since 1998, a permanent social worker has been employed as part of the Hazendal team, to take care of all personal, financial, educational and health matters of the farmers' community. Furthermore, Hazendal has established a fund which is sponsoring a trained teacher to engage the younger ones in wonderful arts and music projects and to support the older children during their school years. Hazendal also works in conjunction with Stellenbosch University on an educational programme to educate the community members about alcohol and drug abuse as well as HIV. At Hazendal we believe that every member deserves to be taken care of and be happy.
