HAZENDAL HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL
1699 - Christoff Hazenwinkel from Braunschweig, Germany is given 60ha of land by Cape Town Governor Simon van der Stel. Located between Kuilsriver and Stellenbosch in South Africa, this farm becomes known as Hazendal.
1728 - Hazenwinkel leaves Stellenbosch and South Africa and relocates back to Germany.
1762 - Hazendal is passed on to Joost Van As.
1777 - Joost Van As slowly sells off bits and pieces of Hazendal's land.
1781 - The now historic gabled outbuilding is built.
1790 - The H-Plan homestead and wine cellar are designed and built. These buildings still stand today and have been given national monument status.
1805 - Joost Van As dies and passes on 60ha of land to his son, Jacobus Petrus. Since that date, the wine state started releasing the premium wines that Hazendal is known for and in a way this is Hazendal's birthdate. In honour of Jacobus Petrus who released Hazendal's first vintages, Hazendal is now planning for its first special Petrus range.
1831 - The farm is bought by Izaak Bosman which begins 163 years of ownership by the Bosman family.
1994 - Dr Mark Voloshin, chairman of MARVOL Management (Pty) Ltd. South Africa, purchases Hazendal Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Winelands and together with his partner, Leo Schumacher, begins renovating it to the highest standards.
1996 - Inauguration of the Hazendal's first production of its harvest in the new state of the art wine cellar and the opening of the Hazendal Hermitage Restaurant.
1997 - The opening of the MARVOL Museum. Dr Voloshin on behalf of the MARVOL Museum bestows a Russian Fabergé Egg to President Nelson Mandela, which was specially designed for the president.
1999 - Hazendal Winemaker Ronell Wiid is the first woman to win the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award.
2000 - Hazendal releases its first Cap Classique named White Nights to mark the millennium.
2002 - Hazendal's Chardonnay wins a Gold Medal at the Du Monde Competition in France.
2004 - Hazendal celebrates the 10 year anniversary of its new owners.
2008 - The opening of Hazendal's latest community project, the Plaasteater
