From Russia with Love

The historic Hazendal Estate lies nestled against the gentle slopes of the Bottelary Hills between Stellenbosch and the northern suburbs of Cape Town.  Established in 1699, Hazendal was purchased in 1994 by Russian born entrepreneur Dr Mark Voloshin, who restored the historic estate to its former glory, forging a fascinating blend of Cape Dutch and Russian cultures.

2006 marked the beginning of another exciting chapter in Hazendal’s history as owner Dr Mark Voloshin and long time business partner Leo Schumacher brought the next generation of leaders on board.  Schumacher´s son Leonid is managing the overall activities of the MARVOL Group in South Africa. Simone Voloshin oversees the wine marketing and sales, while Mr Schumacher’s daughter Rebecca Horn and daughter in law Vera Schumacher serve as restaurant and functionmanagers.  This new generation of leaders serves to ensure the legacy of the family-run tradition that characterizes Hazendal while infusing fresh and innovative ideas for the future.

The unique blend of Russian inspiration and Cape Dutch style is reflected in the wines produced on the estate. Winemaker Ronel Wiid uses the most natural processes available to create two distinct ranges: the premium label Hazendal and the easy drinking Kleine Hazen. The cultural alliance between Russia and the Cape has lead to the creation of the popular White Nights Methode Cap Classique.

Hazendal guests are encouraged to enjoy our exquisite cuisine in the elegant Hermitage Restaurant (open daily for breakfast & lunch) or enjoy a picnic with family and friends on our picturesque grounds.  Guests can also enjoy wine tasting, a tour through the Marvol Museum featuring a fascinating insight into Russian culture with authentic icons and artwork, or relax on Hazendal´s wide lawn area while letting your children have fun on the playground.
