The Hazendal Festival brings together artists, scientists and cultural practitioners to think, create and debate together about important dynamics affecting our shared world. The festival’s first Soil Edition is curated by the international South African curator Khanyisile Mbongwa who brought together leaders in the fields of art, music, culture, fashion, theatre, dance and academia to reflect on the cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary meanings of soil.

Mbongwa has crafted a thought-provoking and multi-sensory program spanning the weekend of October 4-6 which will feature live music and theatre performances, fine dining, an academic symposium, an art exhibition, immersive workshops, and a thoughtful children’s programme. Commissioned works will include a sculptural installation by Thania Petersen, an interventional procession by Sethembile Msezane, a land and sound constellation by Sisonke Papu, as well as the launch of the limited edition MCC label by Athi-Patra Ruga.

Mbongwa’s programme will be guided by the Nguni proverb “Belele nje, Abathulanga” which in English translates to “They may be asleep but they are not quiet” and in Afrikaans to “Hulle slaap dalk, maar hulle is nie stil nie”. Reflecting on the interconnected themes of land, belonging, and repair – the programme invites attendees to reflect on the topics of love, grief, and healing.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Hazendal Wine Estate to experience Mbongwa’s care-centred and cure-driven programme for the Hazendal Festival | Soil Edition. Please note that your choice of experiences can be added to your online basket after you have added the festival ticket.
